IN MEMORIAM, CARL DEAN WILSON (1946-1998)

The Saddest of News: A tragic passing in the BB family — “the voice and heart of an angel” — Carl Wilson was arguably the best voice in a band full of great voices and a true gentleman. His importance to The Beach Boys and his loss cannot be underestimated. Please see our memorial site for Carl. (2/6/98)

The first Carl Wilson Walk Against Cancer and a Carl Wilson memorial concert were held in Hollywood, CA on October 18, 1998. Proceeds benefitted the American Cancer Society. More. (10/24/98)

The Beach Boys have been named as part of the first class of inductees into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, to join with fellow charter members The Ames Brothers; The Andrews Sisters; Crosby, Stills, and Nash; The Drifters (with Clyde McPhatter/Billy Pinckney); The Manhattan Transfer; The Platters; and The Supremes. The finalists were chosen from a list of 12 vocal groups nominated from each decade ('40s,'50s, '60s, '70s), through voting by an induction committee and readers of Goldmine magazine. The groups will be inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame (located in Sharon, PA) on Oct. 30, 1998 in a closed ceremony. (9/24/98)

Both Brian and Carl Wilson were named to UK publication MOJO's list of the greatest singers of all time. Brian charted in at number 47 and Carl at number 55. MOJO's top three choices were (in order) Aretha Franklin, Frank Sinatra, and Ray Charles. (9/24/98)

Tammy Wynette's final recording, “In My Room,” with Brian Wilson, has just been released. The song is part of a multi-artist tribute collection dedicated to Wynette, Tribute to Tradition, released Sept. 22, 1998, on Columbia Records. (9/24/98)

Bruce Johnston's project with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Symphonic Sounds: Music of the Beach Boys, was also released on Aug. 11, 1998. The album features symphonic renditions of Beach Boys songs with guest vocalists, including Bruce, Mike Love, and Matt Jardine. Others involved in this project include Billy Hinsche, Mike Meros, and Adrian Baker. See Platinum Entertainment's website for more details. (8/12/98)

Brian Wilson's new solo album Imagination, is now available in stores. An a capella version of “Your Imagination” is also available on the 3-song CD single release (it will not appear on the album). The retail chain Best Buys is offering a bonus “Words and Music” CD packaged with Imagination, featuring Brian being interviewed by Sean Lennon.
Other tracks on Imagination include “She Says That She Needs Me,” “South American,” “Where Has Love Been,” “Keep an Eye on Summer,” “Dream Angel,” “Cry,” “Let Him Run Wild,” “Lay Down Burden” (a tribute to brother Carl), “Sunshine,” and “Happy Days Are Here Again.” Guest lyricists include Jimmy Buffet, Carole Bayer Sager, and J.D. Souther. Co-producer Joe Thomas says, “Where this album is (in sound and spirit) is pretty much the period right before Pet Sounds.” Visit Break Away and Giant Records website for more details and downloadable clips. Alan Jardine, along with his two grown sons, Matt and Adam, has been recording a new album this summer. The currently untitled album will have an environmental theme and will feature songs written and performed by the Jardines. Beach Boys supporting musicians Mike Kowalski, Mike Meros, Ed Carter, and Billy Hinsche have been tapped to provide backing. Alan is co-producing with Michael Utley, who has produced for Jimmy Buffett. The Jardines have already recorded one song in Buffett's studio, an upbeat number called “Islands in the Sun.” Other songs that may be included are: a remake of Buffett's “A Pirate Looks at 40”; a remake of “California Saga”; a new number by Alan and Larry D'Voskin called “Wish”; and additional works by Alan, Matthew, and Adam. Mike Love, Bruce Johnston, and David Marks have joined with José Hernandez and his Mariacho Sol de Mexico to remake “California Girls” as “Acapulco Girls,” with Spanish language lyrics and Latin rhythms. “Kokomo,” in English and Spanish is also included. Love, Johnston and Marks appear on these two songs from the album, which is called Acapulco Girls. (5/27/98)

There is a new book out of the United Kingdom, Back to the Beach: A Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys Reader, compiled by Kingsley Abbot and published by Helter Skelter Publishing. The forward is by Brian Wilson. (5/27/98)

Bruce Johnston was a guest on the April 11 episode of NPR's Rock & Roll America series. The program, titled “Rock of Ages: Religion and Rock & Roll” focused on the role of religion in rock music. The June 6 show is called “Sum Sum Summertime” and will focus on “sun, sand, cars, vacations and rock & roll,” according to the program's website. (4/18/98)

Bruce Johnston, Mike Love, and David Marks, along with Dean Torrence, have released an album of remakes of automotively-themed classics in a salute to NASCAR's 50th anniversary. This special collector's edition has ten tracks, including “Little GTO,” “Little Old Lady from Pasadena,” “Fun, Fun, Fun,” “I Get Around,” and “Ballad of Ole' Betsy.” Salute to NASCAR is available on CD and cassette at Union 76 stations for a limited time period.
