BEACH BOYS HAWTHORNE LANDMARK DEDICATION

A commemorative landmark plaque and monument was dedicated on May 20, 2005 at the site of the Hawthorne, CA house where the Wilson brothers grew up and The Beach Boys began as a group. Harry Jarnagan, with help from Paula Bondi-Springer, worked with the Hawthorne City Council and the state Historical Resources Commission to install the landmark plaque at 3701 W. 119th St. The project has the full support of the Wilson family, who were out in full force for the ceremony, as were the Jardines. Dennis' eldest son Scott Wilson provided construction services for the monument. About 1000 people attended the ceremony, which was hosted by Fred Vail and included speakers and musical performances. Brian Wilson and members of his current touring band sang “In My Room” and “Surfer Girl.” Fellow Beach Boys Alan Jardine and David Marks were also there. David performed Dennis Wilson's song “You and I,” accompanied by Billy Hinsche on keyboards and Dennis' grandson Matt Wilson on guitar. Alan reminisced about the early days and the Beach Boys' beginnings. All three Beach Boys unveiled the monument together. The house was torn down in the 1980s to make way for the Century Freeway (I-105). Custom engraved bricks were sold to help raise money for the landmark construction. Information on the Beach Boys landmark project can be found at their website.
blankspacerThe Hawthorne Chamber of Commerce still has some of the items available that were sold at the landmark dedication. You can purchase the pins, postcards, and envelopes. The pins/badges and postcards are color and say “Greetings from Hawthorne, Home of the Beach Boys.” The envelopes are black and white and contain a flyer about the dedication. Both the postcards and the envelopes state that they're honoring the dedication of the Beach Boys California Historical Landmark, May 20, 2005. You can buy any combination of the 3 for $10, plus $3 shipping, and they reportedly accept credit card payments. Contact Susan Lanfre at 310-676-1163 or by email. (updated 4/13/05)

MORE LANDMARK: The Beach Boys Historic Landmark Project will be inscribing new donated bricks on the monument in Hawthorne, CA (where the Beach Boys began), in time for the upcoming first anniversary of its dedication on May 20th.
